Basic Belgian Waffles

Ingredients

  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch 
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder 
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt 
  • 1 1/3 cups milk 
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar 
  • 2 large eggs 
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted 
  • Sliced strawberries, for garnish 
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for garnish 

Directions

  1. Preheat waffle maker. Preheat oven to 200°F. 
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, confectioners’ sugar, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. 
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk milk, white vinegar, eggs, and butter until well blended. 
  4. Gradually pour milk mixture into flour mixture, stir until almost combined. Batter will have some small lumps. Let stand 5 minutes for batter to expand. 
  5. Pour batter onto waffle maker and cook until desired doneness.  
  6. Place waffle on a cookie sheet and keep warm in oven. Repeat with remaining batter.  
  7. Serve warm with strawberries and sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar. 

Makes: 8 (6-inch) round waffles 

Test Kitchen Tips

  • Bacon Waffles – cook 8 strips bacon to crispy, cool and chop before adding to batter.  
  • Orange Waffles – add 2 teaspoons grated orange zest to dry ingredients. 
  • Coconut Waffles – substitute 1 1/3 cups canned unsweetened coconut milk for milk and add 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut to dry ingredients.
